To sell your product or service you must first realize what it is you are really selling.  It is more important to look at the effect you will have on the buyer, beyond the actual ‘item’ that is exchanged.  The ‘item’ you sell is the tool you use to cause an effect.  You may sell an automobile, but you are really providing mobility and access and freedom.

Then look at what sets you apart from others selling the same product or service.  How are you different?  How are you better?  What one trait or behavior you present turns the shopper into a customer?

The next consideration is identifying those individuals who will be interested in what you have to offer.  By identifying them, you can target them with your approach and your effort.  Are age or gender factors?  How about income or education?  Does location make a difference?  Answering these questions will create a picture of your customer, and define what their desires are.
